La Marca bags are ethically made by a family-run business in Mexico working to preserve traditional artisanal crafts.

Leather tooling is a traditional Mexican craft regaining prominence in Mexico and around the world, aided by the shift away from mass-production and resource wastage, as consumers look to how their garments and accessories are produced.

Termed ‘artisanal luxury’, these products reflect the time, skill and level of hand-crafting involved in each item and the culture and heritage behind the craft.

Mexico is a land of colour – and La Marca bags reflect this. The leather is coloured usually using natural dyes which are vegetable, berry and bark-based pigments applied by hand to the leather. Some water-based paints are used to create particular finishes.

The leather is cow leather which has been processed in small batches. La Marca’s makers have teamed with a small leather producer who uses vegetable-tanning, an environmentally friendly process which does not involve harsh chemicals. Leather is tanned through a series of washes using different combinations of vegetable tannins. Both labour and time intensive, vegetable-tanning is the ‘original’ leather tanning process, dating back hundreds of years. In modern times it has been overtaken by large-scale chemical factory methods which are faster and cheaper.
